6+1 Urban Scenes: a narrative about the Athenian urban landscape

The underground train network emerges selectively, bringing us
face to face with hyperlocalities of various characteristics, different significance and function within the city, most usually in context of political and social conflicts.
In response to the competitions for the public spaces in the vicinity of the stations of the new Athens metro line, we formed a broad interdisciplinary team and attempted to reconsider the concept of public space, experimenting with scale, typology, function, and design methodologies. The underground train network emerges selectively, bringing us face to face with hyperlocalities of various characteristics, different significance and function within the city, most usually in a context of political and social conflicts. Drawing information from these identified localities, we took some steps back, and looking at the big picture, we attempted to process these spaces integrated into a broader above-ground network of open public spaces within the dense urban fabric.

Our next steps and intentions are to once again bring to the spotlight issues of programming and designing of public spaces through a broader discourse with stakeholders, scientists, decision-makers, institutions, and, of course, the directly involved parties—the citizens of each city.
